PLANT MORPHOGENESIS – INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACHES

Plant morphogenesis – the process by which plants generate structure, form and organisation over time – is now a prime area of dialogue between the life sciences, philosophy and artistic practices. Plants grow without a single central control centre, develop in a modular fashion, respond to the environment and its changes, and continually transform their structure: they are open, dynamic, metamorphic and relational systems. Over the past fifteen years, Critical Plant Studies has examined plant life as a subject of cross-cutting and interdisciplinary inquiry. By shifting the focus away from humans and recognising the biological and ontological complexity of plants, the central focus of these studies is on the possibility of dismantling and redefining the boundaries of cultural, epistemological, aesthetic, ethical and political categories. Through the prism of plant morphogenesis, and the interdisciplinary approaches through which it can be explored and studied (artistic practices, aesthetics, epistemology, biology, physics, mathematics), this one-day conference aims to reflect on the potential for the convergence of different fields of knowledge and the emergence of new forms of knowledge, life and artistic expression.
